“We consider sovereignty to be a natural right no one is capable of giving up… We understand the Serbian position on Kosovo,” Gasparovic added.

“We would appreciate it if the UN Mission were to visit those areas of Kosovo that testify to the real state of affairs the most, and then consider those findings when discussing a new UN resolution,” Gasparovic said.

Tadić relayed Serbia’s gratitude for what he described as Slovakia’s principled position on Kosovo.

Tadić also warned that the province’s independence would represent a dangerous precedent, adding that unilateral recognition of that independence would prove “very dangerous”.

“I cannot predict the behavior of the council member states. What I continue to do is persuade them that independence would constitute for a dangerous precedent and that we are in need of a balanced, compromise solution,” Tadić said.

Tadić repeated Kosovo’s independence was unacceptable for Serbia, as it would “jeopardize the stability of the region and that of other crisis areas”.

“Serbia remains dedicated to the negotiating process and wishes to reach a solution through peaceful and diplomatic means, not through the use of force,” he said.

Gasparovic and Tadić also discussed bilateral issues, European integration, economic cooperation and investments, and treatment of minorities in each country.
