Politika’s military analyst Ljubodrag Stojadinović told B92 that while every government wishes to gain control over the so-called ministries of force, entangling the issue of appointment or dismissal of the Serbian Army CoS into party politics constituted for “pure pathology”.“We are back in the era of a party army. This pressure, political ambiance and pressure on the Chief of Staff himself suggest that high ranking army officers must choose political sides, must find out which is the strongest party at any given moment, so as to take care of their careers. This goes for the CoS the most. His position is such that he would have to constantly take care of who the next minister is, which party is the strongest and how to approach that party,” Stojadinović said.
“If that is what is happening, then we will have an army in disarray, which will turn into a voluntary fire brigade society with no restrictions imposed on its members as to their political affiliation,” Stojadinović said.
Lt. Gen. Ponoš, a Serb born in Knin, Croatia, and educated in the former Yugoslavia and abroad, is Serbia’s youngest chief of the general staff, and has come under sharp criticism from some so-called nationalist parties for being “excessively pro-Western”.
