British journalist Tim Judah believes that Russia will play the key role in the Kosovo status settlement, adding that no one can predict Russia’s exact moves. “Kosovo may become independent even without the UN Security Council resolution”, Judah argued.

“Should the UN SC fail to adopt the resolution, Kosovo would proclaim independence followed by the recognition of such an act by the U.S, Great Britain and some other states. Ahtisaari’s plan would thus sink into oblivion, and Serbs and other minorities in Kosovo would remain unshielded, without the EU mission set up in the province or the international high representative appointed to Kosovo”, Judah said.

Bataković replied that the mentioned scenario represented “wishful thinking”  with a view providing support for the Albanians’ demands.

Ivan Vejvoda from the Balkan Trust for Democracy said that entering the Partnership for Peace Program was a major step for Serbia, adding that compromise was necessary for creating a sustainable solution.

“The future and the stability of the region are at stake along with its pace in the EU integration process”, Vejvoda said.

President Tadić said yesterday that Serbia could not decide on the future status of Kosovo, even though it rejected its independence.

The negotiating process on the future of Kosovo in Vienna has been brought to a close with no prospects of a compromise. UN special Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari will review his draft plan and complete the recommendations for the Kosovo status settlement, taking into account numerous amendments that the Belgrade team tabled during the talks.

Ahtisaari is expected to produce the final draft by March 10.
