"Srebrenica Declaration is a moral act"

The adoption of the Declaration is a moral act that Serbia needs in order to distance itself from “a horrific crime that the ICJ qualified as genocidal”, a statement read.

Representatives of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Civil Alliance of Serbia and the Social Democratic Union announced the campaign to canvass citizens’ support for their draft declaration on the implementation of the ICJ’s judgment to make its way onto the Parliament’s agenda.

Serbia’s legal advisor in the International Court of Justice Radoslav Stojanović told B92 that the court’s ruling didn’t compel Serbia to adopt the Declaration. Mandatory elements of the ruling pertain to Serbia’s obligation towards The Hague Tribunal and the handing over of the remaining war crimes indictees, Stojanović said.

“So far Serbia has incurred political pressure from international organizations and bodies. The ruling now binds Serbia to fulfill its duties to the Hague”, Stojanović argued.

In light of the announcements that Croatia may drop the charges against Serbia and settle the dispute out of court, Stojanović labeled Croatia’s move wise and said he would advise the Serbian Government to embark on negotiations with Zagreb.

“I will propose negotiations to settle the matter and advise that Serbia own up to the fact that the crimes were indeed committed instead of fending off allegations”, Stojanović concluded.
