German ambassador: Hague first, EU talks later

“The key is in the hands of the Serbian government, and in the cooperation with the Hague tribunal”, the ambassador said, repeating that Serbia must extradite all six Hague indictees still at large, or prove with solid arguments that it is unable to do so.

Asked whether the EU association talks might continue before all the obligations toward the Tribunal have been met, ambassador Zobel answered, “No”.

D’Alema: Continuation of talks important

Italian foreign minister Massimo D’Alema, however, said it was of “exceptional importance” that the EU continues its suspended association and stabilization talks with Serbia.

After meeting his Slovenian counterpart Dimitrij Rupel, the Italian minister said they agreed that the EU had not yet reached “its reasonable borders”.

“It is clear that the whole of the Western Balkans belongs within those borders”, D’Alema told a press conference in Ljubljana.

To this end, D’Alema believes, the Union should resume its talks with Serbia.

“We will closely monitor the new Kosovo status determining process and will, naturally, respect the wishes of the Kosovo residents, but will at the same time respect the position of the state of Serbia, as well as the principles we stand for – minority rights, including those of the Serb minority in Kosovo”, the Italian foreign policy chief concluded.
