Figel in Belgrade to discuss visas

“Serbia is one of the most important partner countries of the European Union and I am sure that its destiny is in the Union. As a commissioner with an increasingly important portfolio, I see many reasons for going to Belgrade and talking with my partners there, along with the citizens. Education, youth, culture, civil society, are all basic cornerstones of a country and the deeper we go into these fields, the faster futures will be built and in this way the economic possibilities along with the entire society and the political scene will see progress.” Figel said.

He said that the EU will secure an exchange of an additional 100 students from Serbia and other Balkan countries with the program “Erasmus Mundus,” which, according to Figel, will be the Fulbright Program of the EU.

Figel said that as of January 2007, the visa regime for entering EU member countries will be less stringent, based on a decision made in 2004, which was adopted by Great Britain, Ireland and Denmark.

“Relaxing the visa regime means getting free visas and the already relaxed conditions for entering the EU member countries offered for students and scholars. We are working at the same time on other levels which will enable even less stringent conditions and maybe even free visas. We are currently in the final phase of the internal discussions. When we are ready to speed up the process, we will, and I hope that we will reach an agreement in order to make the visa politics more constructive.” Figel said.

Figel will be meeting with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Ivana Dulić-Marković, Education and Sports Minister Slobodan Vuksanović and Culture Minister Dragan Kojadinović.
