“We are a democratic party and each Senior Council member has a right to his or her own position, as well as to put it to a test in the Senior Council meeting and find out if they have backing for their ideas”, she said.

Suzana Grubješić said G17 Plus remains convinced it will win enough votes to enter the next parliament independently, citing good results in the recent local elections as the source of this optimism.

“When it comes to coalitions, we welcome all democratic parties, we are talking to all of them, but these are not specific, formal talks, so for the moment I can’t say there are any substantial coalition deals”, she said.

SRS Fatherland Congress

The Serbian Radical Party (SRS) will elect new leadership at the party Fatherland Congress.

The only candidates for the two top party positions are the current president and deputy, Vojislav Šešelj and Tomislav Nikolić.

Tomislav Nikolić said Serbia will not become a democratic country until the Radicals establish their government. Speaking at the opening of the congress he said the Radicals teach others democracy while remaining the opposition.

“Serbia is ruled by the very worst, while the very best remain in opposition. Until the best gain power, Serbia will remain a defective democracy”.

He called on prime minister Vojislav Koštunica to schedule an urgent parliament session to determine whether the ruling coalition has the necessary majority to continue to govern and conduct the privatization process.

“If such majority doesn’t exist, they shouldn’t dare sell another liter of Serbian water, since we will cancel all those sales after the elections”, Nikolić said.

He asked his parties membership and activists to take part in the constitutional referendum, adding that the proposal was adopted with “a crucial contribution from the Radicals”.
