National bank issues Tesla coins
NBS Governor Radovan Jelašić spoke about the image of the famous scientist being used on dinar banknotes from 1970 until today. According to Jelašić, Tesla is most certainly ‘the most frequently represented person’ on the banknotes in the second half of the 20th century.‘It could even be said that Tesla shared out fate in this way, through falls and rises of the dinar’, added the governor, speaking at a meeting held in the new building of the central Serbian bank in Belgrade.
Coins with Nikola Tesla’s image worth 20 dinars will be in circulation parallel with the existing coins depicting the St Sava temple, issued in 2003. This is the first time Tesla’s image found its way not only to banknotes, but to coins as well.
Marking the 150th anniversary of Nikola Tesla’s birth, the NBS issued gold and silver coins.
Gold and silver coins have the same visual style – the obverse side shows Nikola Tesla’s portrait and anniversary dates, 1856-2006, while the reverse shows Serbia’s coat-of-arms, with Cyrillic and Latin semi-circular inscription, ‘Republic of Serbia’, as well as denomination, with ‘NBS’ under it.
