"Roads can now be built using fly ash"

The regulation on the use of fly ash in road construction and infrastructure development will enter into force on July 3, and the use will be first tested on a 200m section of Corridor 11 near the town of Obrenovac, Mihajlovic said during a visit to the Nikola Tesla B power plant (TENT B) in Obrenovac.

The construction of a single kilometer of Corridor 11 highway costs EUR 7 million on average, while using fly ash will cost between EUR 1.4 and 1.8 million per kilometer, Mihajlovic said, adding that Serbia was currently building about 240 kilometers of highway on Corridors 10 and 11.

Serbia’s landfills currently contain about 200 million tons of fly ash, whose market value is around EUR 1 billion, and its use in road construction can bring about savings of 30 to 80 percent compared to using standard construction materials.

Serbia’s annual fly ash production is 6.5 million tons.
