Vučić stressed that people "need to work together to rebuild the region as a place of freedom and open society," the Serbian government said in a statement.

Vučić pointed out that "his biggest challenge in the region was not political, but economic," explaining that economic hardships were to blame for the slow progress.

Serbia was the first in the region to conduct a fiscal consolidation without an intervention from abroad, in order to overcome its financial difficulties, he remarked.

"The Serbian government feels encouraged more than ever to move forward and do more to change the difficult situation the country is in. The thing that unites and pushes these reforms forward is the need for political courage," Vučić said, and added:

"The government needs political courage to manage public spending, implement the necessary labour reforms and stay on the path to greater regional stability and better economy."
