BELGRADE Ljubisav Orbovic said on Wednesday that he expects amendments to the Labor Law to be withdrawn from the public debate. The reason, said the president of the Alliance of Independent Trade Unions of Serbia (SSSS), is that they were written "in such a manner that only one party can be satisfied." Unions expect withdrawal of amendments to Labor Law “Employers are rubbing their hands since all that will be taken from employees will go into their pockets,” Orbovic told reporters in the town of Nis. He said that according to assessments of the unions, every employee would be left short of EUR 50 in the net amount on a monthly basis that is around EUR 600 annually if the amendments were implemented. “When you add contributions to that, you can easily see the extent to which the rights (of employees) will be denied,” Orbovic said. But Serbia's Minister of Economy Sasa Radulovic said on Wednesday that he believes amendments to the Labor Law will enter parliamentary procedure in January 2014, expressing hope that trade unions will return to negotiations within the Social and Economic Council. The door is open to the trade unions to continue participating in discussions on the law, Radulovic told Tanjug. "Sticking one's head in the sand and hoping that the bill will somehow not be passed is really neither realistic, nor good for Serbian citizens or all of the employees represented (by the trade unions)," Radulovic said. Long-term improvement in the country depends on upcoming reforms, he said. "If we do not implement tough reforms right at the beginning of the year, we will not be able to expect improvements," the minister said. "We must establish conditions for creating new jobs," Radulovic added. The public debate on amendments to the Labour Law began last week, but public presentations were cancelled as a result of trade union protests. At the moment, the debate is conducted through the website of the Ministry of Labor. Trade unions have objected to the public debate being scheduled to take place during the holiday season, also warning that the proposed amendments will reduce the workers' rights and that their salaries will be cut.
