BELGRADE Minister of Economy Sasa Radulovic has said that the focus of the Serbian government's economic policy will be on "domestic companies." Radulovic, who on Wednesday took part in the presentation of a business survey carried about by the U.S. Agency for International Development, explained that this was the case "regardless of who the owners of those companies are." Economic policy "focused on domestic companies" "Foreign investors are exceptionally important for Serbia, but the best way to attract them is to create good business conditions for domestic businesses," he said. The minister stressed that the role of the state was "not to employ the citizens and invest in the economy, but to create conditions that will lead to that." In that context, Radulovic said that it was necessary to adopt laws on labor and planning and construction as soon as possible. The economic system is based on profit, said he, adding that "Serbia is not in a hopeless condition but the price will be paid by our children if the opportunity to change something now is missed." Radulovic stated that his ministry will work to attract foreign investors and provide incentives, but that "it will not gift money to anyone, because that's no development strategy." "That represents irresponsible behavior when it comes to the taxpayer money, and will no longer be possible - either Serbia will survive, or this quick sand will survive," he was quoted as saying in an interview for Vecernje Novosti. Radulovic also confirmed that the head of the SIEPA agency, Bozidar Laganin, was facing criminal charges. Asked to comment on a statement made by Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic, who described him as "sometimes lacking in tactfulness, but most often being right," the minister said he was "not a politician." "We cannot avoid the truth, we must face it, although it is sometimes brutal and difficult to accept. When you realize the truth, then you can solve the problems," said he. (Beta, file) Beta Tanjug
