BELGRADE -- The government on Sunday approved the appointment of Aleksandar Vučić as chairman of the Committee for cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
At the same time United Regions of Serbia (URS) leader and outgoing Finance and Economy Minister Mlađan Dinkić has been appointed as deputy chairman.
The government appointed Dinkić at Vučić's proposal, who explained to the ministers that the UAE "are very satisfied with their past cooperation with the outgoing minister of finance and economy."
The government unanimously approved the proposal that Vučić and Dinkić continue to manage cooperation with the UAE together.
Cooperation with the UAE is of strategic importance for Serbia, because after the establishment of a partnership between Etihad and Jat Airways, which is being transformed into Air Serbia, huge investments are expected from the friendly country in the coming period, and some of them are the result of the work of Dinkić's team.
According to a government release, in the cooperation agreement signed February 17, the Serbian and UAE governments pledged to form a committee and subcommittees to deal with various areas.
The task of the committee is to define goals and ways to establish cooperation with the relevant UAE institutions and propose activities for attracting and financing investment and other projects of importance to the Serbian economy, especially in the areas of defense, agriculture, energy, telecommunications and transport.
At a session of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) main board on Sunday, at which Vučić proposed candidates for new ministers, he also thanked the URS for bringing some foreign companies to Serbia.
The URS, now in the opposition, was until recently part of the ruling coalition together with the SNS and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS).
