BELGRADE Miroslav Miskovic's Delta Holding, Serbia's largest privately-owned company, has five organizational units and employs 7,200 people. Miskovic was detained by the police on Wednesday morning, on suspicion that he engaged in illegal business practices. Delta Holding: History and numbers His company, made up of Delta Real Estate, Delta Agrar, Delta Distribucija (Distribution), Delta Sport, and Delta Generali Insurance groups, does business across the economic spectrum - from agriculture, food processing, retail, export, import, to representing foreign companies, land development and real estate, and financial and insurance services. According to the data made available by the company, it had an income of RSD 39.1bn (EUR 343mn) in the first half of 2012 - 6.5 percent up year-on-year, and a profit of RSD 2.3bn (some EUR 20mn) in the same period. In 2009, Delta Holding ranked as the fifth largest among 100 companies from the Adria (Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Bosnia) region. Besides Serbia, it does business in the markets of Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, the EU, Russia and Switzerland, and is the first Serbia-based company to make significant investment in a EU country. Delta Sport Group is Nike's exclusive representative in the region, and holds franchise contracts to open Costa Coffee shops in former Yugoslav republics and in Albania. Miroslav Miskovic founded his company in February 1991, employing only five people. At the time, Delta dabbled in sales of fruit, vegetables, and wood industry products. Later the same year, Miskovic launched Serbia's first private bank - Delta Banka. In the period between 1994 and 1999, Delta became the representative of Fiat, Nestle, Beiersdorf, and other foreign companies. As the country was struggling under the economic sanctions imposed against it, Miskovic expanded his business to Russia and Ukraine, and established Delta Osiguranje (Insurance). Starting in 2000, Delta employed 18,000 people, and opened the first store in its Maxi retail chain. After selling Delta Banka to Italy's Banca Intesa, Miskovic invested the money in buying privatized domestic companies, building real estate, and expanding the retail business. Delty City shopping malls sprang up in Belgrade and Podgorica, while Delta Real Estate, in partnership with Austria's Hypo Alpe Adria, built the Belville residential bloc in New Belgrade, that was initially used during the Student Games in 2009. Delta Holding also entered a partnership with Italy's Generali Group, and founded Serbia's first private pension fund. In 2008, the company employed 24,200 people and had spread its business, via acquisition of retail chains, to Bosnia, Montenegro, and Bulgaria. The value of the company's property is believed to have halved when the Maxi chain was sold to Belgium's Delhaize. Miskovic's close associates hinted that Delta's future focus would shift to agriculture, both in Serbia and abroad. Delta Holding HQ (file) Tanjug
