BELGRADE Serbia will be earning EUR 200mnannually from the South Stream gas pipeline transit fees, special adviser to the Ministry of Energy Ljubomir Aksentijevic says. He also announced that the works on this project in the country will symbolically start on December 20. South Stream works in Serbia to start on Dec. 20 The South Stream pipeline construction has started at the Russkaya compressor station in the southern Russia Black Sea region on Friday, while the works on the pipeline section through Serbia should begin by laying the foundation stone for a compressor station in the Banatsko Donje Selo village in northern Serbia, said Aksentijevic. “The first tubes will be finished in the next three years and the other half over the two years to follow,” explained Aksentijevic, adding that there has not been any such investment made in the region over the last 60 years. Aksentijevic stressed that the construction of the gas pipeline through Serbia would not cost the state or the citizens of Serbia anything, while it would derive direct economic benefit from it. He added that about 2,000 people will work constructing the pipeline and that Serbian companies would be involved. A Serbian delegation, led by Minister of Energy Zorana Mihajlovic, attended the groundbreaking ceremony in Russia. The Serbian delegation, with Srbijagas Director Dusan Bajatovic as one of the members, met with Chairman of the Management Committee of Russian energy company Gazprom Alexei Miller on Thursday, according to ITAR-TASS news agency.
