The Serbian operation is known as BIG CEE Serbia, and represents an investment worth EUR 50mn, it has been announced.

The company's website describes it as "an 'Open Mall' retailing platform".

The shopping center shows that Serbia could attract many more investments from Israel and other countries if it improves and changes its investment environment, Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić said at the opening ceremony.

He also described it as "important for Novi Sad and Vojvodina", and said he hoped "it would prompt other Israeli investors to invest throughout Serbia, especially in agriculture".

Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Yossef Levy stressed that the mall was "another proof the Israelis had faith in Serbia's present and future and its economy".

BIG Shopping Centers CEO Eitan Bar Zeev said the new mall covered a space of 40,000 square meters.

"Around 500 people will be employed at the facility, and the people will be able to buy merchandise produced by world-famous brands," Bar Zeev added.

The shopping center is the largest facility of its type in the province of Vojvodina and will bring brands like DIS Supermarket, New Yorker, Home Center and others to consumers in that part of the country.
