BELGRADE National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Dejan Soskic stated on Monday that he had no reason to resign nor to discuss this topic with politicians. "There is no reason for me to resign and I am not considering such a move at all," Soskic said, when asked to comment on the speculation that the country's new ruling coalition wants to see Jorgovanka Tabakovic of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) as the new NBS chief. Central bank chief: I see no reason to resign Speaking during a regular news conference in Belgrade on Monday, the governor noted that the central bank was "often exposed to criticism by both the government and the opposition and that he has nothing against criticism". Soskic said that those who want to depose anyone should use constitutional and legal mechanisms envisaged for the purpose. He added that he "does not think that the statement of the prime minister-designate Ivica Dacic, in which he voiced criticism against the financial sector, constitutes an attack on the NBS". Dacic said last week that the financial sector was "the citizens' greatest enemy" and that "somebody should take responsibility for the poor state it was in". He added that answers to questions he had been asked by the SNS over the previous few days, as to why the dinar had weakened and why everything had become more expensive, would be answered by him in an article he would write from the standpoint of an economist, rather than as the central bank governor, very soon. “When it comes to high interest rates, it would be interesting to hear whether the state administration has been launching initiatives in banks it owns or co-owns for the banks to provide their services at lower prices than the market average,” said the NBS governor. Commenting on an idea by Dacic that "some kind of social agreement should be made with Soskic said that arrangements that would facilitate repayment of loans to enterprises and citizens were possible and that it was in itself not a bad idea, but the arrangements should be reached between banks and their customers, rather than between banks and the state.
