BELGRADE URS leader Mladjan Dinkic posted on Friday on his Twitter account that Zelezara (steel mill) Smederevo would likely find a partner in Russia or China. "For now, we are most likely to win over someone serious from Russia or China," Dinkic, who will join Serbia's next government, wrote in response to a question from one of his followers. Steel mill's partner "from Russia or China", tweets Dinkic In January, the government bought back Zelezara (steel mill) from U.S. Steel for a price of USD 1, as the American company withdrew because it suffered business losses. In 2003, U.S. Steel bought the Smederevo plant - called Sartid at the time. The steel plant had a five percent stake in the country's total steel production and a 14 percent share in exports. It employs 5,500 people. Dinkic noted that the U.S. company recorded losses "because the price of coke dropped while the price of steel kept rising". The partner should come from either Russia or China, because these countries have both iron and coke, said Dinkic. Commenting on the speculation that Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov showed interest in the factory,, Dinkic said that he heard Akhmetov would perhaps be interested in the matter if he could purchase the Smederevo plant together with Kosice steel plant in Slovenia. The factory's production has recently been suspended until September 1. According to announcements, government representatives are currently conducting talks with potential strategic partners. The deadline for submitting binding bids at the tender for the strategic partner of the Smederevo plant was extended for another three months, until September 10, at the request of interested companies. The bids were put in by three companies, Luxembourg-based United Pilsen, Donetsksteel Group from Ukraine and Ural Mining and Metallurgical company from Russia. Tanjug
