U.S. Steel's managing director says that, due to the world economic crisis, the Smederevo steel mill, Serbia’s biggest exporter, will cut exports this year. Speaking to daily Vecernje Novosti, Richard Vietch said the crisis had reflected significantly on the steel industry and market, and on orders for steel production. In order to adapt to the current situation, the company has decided to consolidate production in Europe, which means temporarily halting certain production lines in Serbia. “U.S. Steel to scale down exports” “We have brought our production into complete harmony with the needs of our buyers. The crisis will certainly impact on us to the extent that we will not export as much in this period as we did in the best of times,” the managing director added. He explained that U.S. Steel had had consistently good relations with the Serbian government, which it kept up to speed on all important moves. “Such was the case when we were buying and when we carried out a program to resolve the issue of the surplus workforce. Such is the case now, in the time of the crisis,” said Vietch, who is also the vice-president of the American Chamber of Commerce. “Since its founding in 2001, the Chamber has been an important partner to the government, and it seems to me that it actively participates in Serbian economic development, through partnership and dialogue with all sides that show interest in improving the business climate, especially when issues of vital importance to the business activities of domestic and foreign investors in the Chamber are concerned,” said Vietch. The U.S. Steel managing director emphasized that it was important to the 180 members of the American Chamber of Commerce for work in Serbia to be operative, for the infrastructure to be improved and for licensing procedures to be streamlined. These steps would enable a timely solution to key problems and challenges, important for economic stability and further development of the investment climate in Serbia, he said.
