An European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) representative says the European Union has invested over EUR 1.3bn in Serbia over the past seven years. Speaking at the opening of an EAR-financed market in Leskovac, southern Serbia, John White said yesterday that "more than EUR 20mn of that sum was invested in the development of southern Serbia". "EU invested EUR 1.3bn in Serbia" "This EU aid is not political, but economic, with the goal that every citizen lives better," he was quoted as saying. White also announced that EAR will this year exit Serbia, while the continued assistance will fall under the jurisdiction of the European Commission office in Belgrade. "That means that assistance to Serbia, and of course the south of Serbia, will continue, and full steam ahead," he said, and mentioned the CARDS and IPA programs in this context.
