BELGRADE The position of workers in Serbia "has never been worse in recent history," an official of the Association of Free and Independent Trade Unions has warned. Beta is reporting that the organization's Vice President Ranka Savic spoke in Cacak, central Serbia, on Wednesday to say that the number of unemployed persons reached 1,050,000. Trade unions put number of jobless at 1,050,000 Savic told reporters that according to the official data of the National Employment Office, 765,000 were unemployed, but she stressed that the association possessed precise data about the jobless people who were either not registered with the office or were illegally employed. According to Savic, Serbia's unemployment rate will hit 30 percent by the end of the year. "Since the beginning of 2013, some 30,000 have lost their jobs and it is expected that of 63,000 workers in the companies that are being restructured, half will be declared redundant, as 50 percent of those companies will go bankrupt," she explained. Savic further said that the economic situation this year was worse than in 2012. "The position of workers in Serbia has never been worse because of the enormous number of jobless people, disregard of the Labor Law and collective contracts, no guarantee of payment for work done and no payments of social or pension contributions," she explained.
