Severe drought almost halves corn production

This year's corn production in Serbia is expected to be 45.9 percent down on last year, and amount to 3.5 million tons, the State Statistical Office announced.

BELGRADE This year's corn production in Serbia is expected to be 45.9 percent down on last year, and amount to 3.5 million tons, the State Statistical Office announced. Compared to last year, the production of other crops is also expected to slump - sunflower by 23.1 percent, sugar beet by 22.9 percent, and soy by 42.3 percent, potato by 32.5 percent, and bean by 41.4 percent. Severe drought almost halves corn production According to the situation registered on September 1, the data on expected yields of late season crops and fruits showed that the production of sunflower is expected to be 332,336 tons, soy-254,309 tons, and sugar beet - 2.1 million tons. Compared to the 10-year average (2002-2011), the corn production is expected to fall by 40.9 percent, sugar beet by 20.6 percent, sunflower by 11.2 percent, soy by 28.8 percent, potato by 31.1 percent and bean by 52.3 percent. As regards fruits, apple production is expected to be 40.3 percent, and that of plum 37 percent down on last year. Compared to the 10-year average, the apple production will slide by 29 percent, and that of plum by 28.8 percent. Production of grapes in Serbia is expected to be 11.7 percent down on last year, and reflect a fall of 22.1 percent in comparison to the 10-year average. As regards fruits, apple production is expected to be 40.3 percent, and that of plum 37 percent down on last year.

Compared to the 10-year average, the apple production will slide by 29 percent, and that of plum by 28.8 percent.

Production of grapes in Serbia is expected to be 11.7 percent down on last year, and reflect a fall of 22.1 percent in comparison to the 10-year average.
