About 800 former Zastava car factory workers have not passed Fiat’s tests and therefore they cannot get jobs at the new factory, the Economy Ministry told B92. The ministry says that the government will offer those workers EUR 300 for each year of service, which will be paid in January of 2011. 800 Zastava workers to lose jobs In the next year and a half they will get unemployment benefits worth about RSD 20,000 and training from the National Employment Service (NSZ). According to the Economy Ministry’s information, 1,153 workers have so far passed the tests. 1,100 have already gotten new jobs at the factory, while the remaining 53 are expected to be employed in the next several days. However, the Zastava Automobili Independent Union has completely different information. Union President Zoran Mihajlovic told B92 that many more workers would lose their jobs. He also pointed out that many of them were not informed about the tests’ results. “We have neither seen the tests nor had insight and Fiat’s experts never said how many workers passed the test and how many didn’t,” Mihajlovic said. He explained how they came up with the number of 800 workers who would be declared redundant. “They came up with the number 800 with a simple calculation. Out of 1,600 of us 400 workers took severance pay. There are also some 100 disabled persons who will transfer to Zastava workshop. This means that all the rest who won’t voluntarily leave the factory will be declared redundant and there are about 800 of them. The number matched and then someone thought they could say ‘they didn’t pass the test and that’s why they will be declared redundant,” he stressed. The union president also told B92 about the atmosphere among the workers. “Large number of workers came to ask what we were offered by the Economy Ministry. I can tell you that the mood is very negative, there’s a revolt among the workers who think that the ministry’s decision was hasty and that it is not solving the problem in a right way because 1,600 workers will lose their jobs,” Mihajlovic said. The union held a meeting this morning and the workers will decide about their next steps during the day. The Zastava car factory (FoNet, file)
