Minister doesn’t expect new worker strikes
7 November 2009 | 11:21 | Source: Beta, Dnevnik
no -- Labor Minister Rasim Ljajić said that he does not expect new strikes, and announced that social dialogue with unions would be intensified.

“It is important for the measures which are being proposed by the government to be understood and accepted,” Ljajić told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik.

He said that Serbia has a large budget deficit and “an extremely large” amount of public spending, which continues to grow.

“That it why it would be most realistic to tighten our belts in the first step. I am convinced that it is better to continue those types of measures and savings instead of decreasing pensions or increasing taxes,” Ljajić said.

He said that the government needs to prepare a clear plan for reforming the pension system by February 2010, which is the next time the International Monetary Fund will be sending a mission to Serbia.

The goal of the pension reforms, Ljajić said, should be to have pensions decreased from 13 to 10 percent of the gross domestic product by 2015.
