Banks in Serbia successful in 2007
19 June 2008 | 15:28 | Source: Tanjug
BELGRADE -- Banks in Serbia successfully ended last year with a profit of RSD 23bn, Bank Association of Serbia Secretary General Veroljub Dugaliæ says.

Total assets of the banks have now increased to between EUR 18 and 20bn, and their capital is higher than EUR 4bn, Dugaliæ said at the presentation of the Finansije Top 2007 publication of the Biznis Finansije magazine.

He added said that the growth in the number of bank employees to some 30,000 at the end of 2007 was especially important, because it indicated a major expansion of the banking sector in Serbia.

The same gathering heard SMECA Insurance Director Lidija Vasiæ say that the structure of insurance in Serbia was still unfavorable, because just 11 percent of all premiums referred to life insurance.

The market is still undeveloped, with the share of the insurance premium in the GDP at 1.8 percent, while this figure stands at up to 16 percent in European countries, Vasiæ said.
