EU enlargement: Credibility and compliance

9 January 2009
Dušan Reljić, Solveig Richter

The EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) risks forfeiting its leverage in the Western Balkans, states a new report of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, SWP, written by Solveig Richter and Dušan Reljić.

The comment, entitled, Credibility and Compliance, points out that the EU's credibility in the southeastern European region is weakening due to an insufficiently convincing policy on new members coming from the Western Balkans.

This, in turn, the report argues, is weakening the region's countries' resolve to respect the EU demands and undergo "Europeanization".
