Italian PM Renzi loses referendum and resigns

The president will then be under obligation to intermediate in putting together a new government, and if this proves impossible, Italy will go to elections.

AFP is reporting that the results of the referendum on constitutional changes will lead Italy into "a new period of political uncertainty and economic upheaval."

Reuters said that, according to preliminary and unofficial results, Renzi had been dealt a heavy defeat by the voters.

According to these results, between 57 and 61 percent voted against the proposed changes to limit the power and the size of the Senate.

The agency reported that after Brexit and Donald Trump's victory, the referendum in Italy was seen as fateful.

On the other hand AP said that the referendum had turned into a virtual plebiscite on Renzi's government.
