United States will veto Jeremic because of Kosovo - report

Serbia's Vuk Jeremic ranks second overall after four informal straw polls held at the UN Security Council; Antonio Guterres of Portugal is in first place, and Slovakia's Miroslav Lajcak third overall.

The article, referring to Jeremic's result in the fourth straw poll, quotes unnamed diplomats as saying that "third-placed Vuk Jeremic, the (former) Serbian foreign minister, will almost certainly be vetoed by the U.S.," as Washington has not forgiven him for his opposition to "Kosovan independence."

This concerns Jeremic's activities as Serbia's foreign minister after ethnic Albanians in the country's southern province of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008.

After he left the government, Jeremic served as president of the UN General Assembly. According to the newspaper, Washington's perception is that he used this mandate "as a platform for nationalist rhetoric."

The article also speculates that Guterres might be vetoed, "most plausibly" by Russia, and Lajcak by "one or more" Western members of the UN Security Council.

"Ultimately, competition and deal-making among the major powers will decide the winner. The ups and downs of the straw polls are an outward sign of what is going on behind closed doors but do not tell the whole story," thinks the Guardian.

The fifth informal straw poll will be held at the Security Council later in the day.
