PM supports proposed new law to regulate organ donation

The seven patients from the waiting list informed the prime minister about all the problems of all those for whom a new organ is the only salvation and highlighted the need to adopt a new law on transplantation of human organs for the purpose of medical treatment, which would include a new feature - presumed consent of all adult citizens of the Republic of Serbia, the Serbian government said on its website.

Vucic announced his personal support to the new law because, he said, the fact that there are only three donors per one million inhabitants shows that current measures have not yielded the desired results.

"You know I always insist that we compare ourselves with the better ones. Unfortunately, in this field there are many countries that are better than us. At the moment there are 800 people on the waiting list, waiting for the most important call of their life, and only 10 percent of them receive the life-saving organ. Therefore, in addition to my personal support to the campaign, I think that Serbia urgently needs a new law, which will improve the transplantation program," Vucic stated.

He stressed that he will encourage members of the Belgrade City Assembly and the Serbian government to support with their own example the campaign "The most important call of my life" and sign a donor card.

"I understand the worry, anxiety and race with the time of each of these people with whom I spoke today and I know that hundreds of others have this same problem whose life would be saved with a new organ. As a responsible society we need to create conditions so that more lives could be saved in this way. That should be a personal mission of each of us," Vucic concluded after talks with patients, representatives of Hemofarm and the Ministry of Health.

He thanked Director of Hemofarm Ronald Seeliger on the participation of this company in improving the quality of life in the local community and the creation of public-private partnerships aimed at strengthening services in the Serbian health system.
