Launch of Belgrade-New York airlink made for "historic day"

"Today, our government demonstrated that it is working hard and that it is very committed to the country's economic stability," Mihajlovic, who was on the first flight, also thanked "the government and the people of the United States for their trust," reported Tanjug.

"Hopefully, the flights to New York will be more than just direct flights and more people will come to Serbia to get to know the country," she said, also "expressing the hope that flights to other U.S. cities would be introduced as well."

"June 23 is a historic day for Serbian air transport," said Serbian Ambassador to the U.S. Djerdj Matkovic, thanking everyone who made the direct flights possible.

The reception also showcased Serbia's tourism offer, Tanjug said.

Mihajlovic, who is also minister of construction, transport and infrastructure, was heading a Serbian delegation that arrived on Thursday's inaugural Air Serbia flight to New York, landing at New York's JFK Airport after a nine-and-a-half-hour journey.
