Inappropriate collaterals are a particular problem in the case of the biggest NPLs, he said.

"I expect that appropriate solutions that are the foundation of a strategy jointly prepared by the National Bank of Serbia and the Ministry of Finance will soon be worked out and implemented in practice," he said.

Specialized investment funds such as the KKR have an interest in purchasing NPLs at the lowest price - a globally established 20-odd percent of the loan value - but only on the condition that a loan can be repaid through restructuring or selling collaterals, he said.

The Serbian banking sector is stable and the results of the latest stress tests indicate that it is suitably capitalized and sufficiently solvent, Hanic said.
