PM takes part in christening of passenger cruiser

The shipyard shows dual education in practice, the prime minister said, noting that high-school students had done their internships there.

“If need be, we are willing to support the idea of recruiting additional workforce at Vahali, as this would benefit the entire area,” Vucic said.

“The building of the ship is the beginning of a long journey… The knowledge you demonstrated is the force that helps our Serbia stay the course and avoid any turmoil,” Vucic said.

The ship launched today - the MPS Thomas Hardy - is owned by Swiss company Scylla AG. It is worth EUR 20 million, and has 76 cabins and 10 suits that can accommodate 172 passengers.

Vahali, founded in 1923 in Holland, in 2005 signed a cooperation contract with the owner of Belgrade Shipyard, and has since renewed and modernized it with new equipment and tools worth EUR 2.3 million.

In 2013, the company set up a shipyard in Zasavica, near Sremska Mitrovica, upstream from Belgrade on the Sava River.

Vahali Zasavica is one of the leading river shipbuilders and Serbia can be proud of its shipyard being the best, Vincent Becker, general manager of the Dutch company, said at the ceremony today.

The ships are a Serbian product, designed and built by Serbian workers, and our clients are very satisfied with the job done here at Zasavica, Becker said.

Dutch Ambassador to Serbia Henk Van den Dool described Vahali as a good example of how an innovative approach enabled a high-quality production.

"Several years ago, Vahali decided to do business in Serbia, and here we are today christening probably the 27th ship that Vahali has produced in Serbia," the ambassador said.
