If borders are closed, Serbia has the capacity to temporarily accommodate the number of migrants who enter the country over two or three days.

Reception centers are transit, not permanent - Commissariat

The capacity to accommodate 6,000 people has been calculated based on the data on the average daily passage of migrants, Commissariat sources told Belgrade daily Danas.

Serbia will have 17 transit centers for migrants, while those that can now accept migrants are located in Aleksinac, Tutin, Belgrade, Presevo and Subotica, and in addition there are five centers for asylum seekers - Krnjaca, Sjenica, Tutin, Bogovadja and Banja Koviljaca.

The officials said that "the centers are intended for emergency reception and care, but there is no mention of migrants staying, these are transit centers".

The Commissariat sources also explained that abandoned buildings are used as these centers - former factory halls, motels that are not in use, former hospitals, abandoned former cooperatives or collective centers.

"Austria ready to seal border"

After Austria's announcement that it will admit up to 40,000 refugees this year, the question arises as to what to do with the people arriving after the country has reached its asylum limit, Director of the Asylum Protection Center NGO Rados Djuric said on Tuesday.

“It is evident that Austria is preparing to seal off its borders, and this will have a successive effect on all countries along the Balkan route for refugees, including Serbia,” he told Tanjug.

“However, this decision will certainly slow down the movement of people. On one side, Serbia has the EU member states - Croatia and Slovenia, and on the other - Macedonia; and this makes its position even more complex,” Djuric explained.

Commenting on the new regime for refugees in Croatia, Djuric said that Croatia took the move after the Austrian minister's visit, showing that everything had been agreed.
