Thaci says Islamic State leader sent him "death threat"

The report added that "a Pristina news website this week reported details of a letter addressed to then-prime minister Thaci in late 2014, allegedly signed by IS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, calling on him to abandon Kosovo's alignment with the West or face 'great revenge'."

"It was a death threat against me and my family," Thaci, described as "the front-runner to become president of Muslim-majority Kosovo this year," told AFP on Wednesday.

He confirmed he received the letter while he served as the prime minister of the self-proclaimed state of Kosovo, and stressed he would "not step back or retreat from any threats in tackling Islamic fundamentalism."

According to some estimates, about 300 citizens of the southern Serbian province joined Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stated during his recent visit to Pristina that Kosovo "set a powerful example for the region" by what AFP said were "high-profile arrests of recruiters and returnee fighters and strengthening legislation against them" - but that "it is obvious more needs to be done."
