EU to intensify external Schengen border checks

EU ministers agreed to, starting in March, begin systematic and regular controls that will include EU citizens on the external borders of the Schengen area.

Currently controls are "only temporary and mostly visual" while new, stricter controls will include checking the identity of travelers and comparison with the data from electronic databases.

The meeting accepted a request of France to establish a single registry of passengers in air traffic, whose main objective is to provide unique and accurate information about those joining the war in Syria and then returning to Europe.

The meeting did not discuss a general suspension of freedom of movement within the space of the 26 members of the Schengen zone, according to RTS.
