"These people are alive and we are doing everything we can so they can come to Serbia as soon as possible. We will be able to talk about everything else after they are rescued," Vucic told reporters in Nis, southern Serbia.

Responding to questions about another kidnapping - that of former bodyguard of assassinated Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, Srdjan Babic - Vucic said this case was different.

"I cannot respond to everything some newspaper prints," Vucic said.

Vucic also spoke about the opening of first chapters in Serbia's membership negotiations with the EU by the end of the year to say it will be "good news for Serbia" and thanked German Ambassador Axel Dittmann "for announcing it today."

Vucic said, answering questions from reporters, that it would be "an indication to all that Serbia is accepted and respected, and has done good things."

"I'm grateful for what he said about economic reforms in Serbia and we will continue to deal with it," said Vucic.

He added that the opening of chapters 23 and 24 early next year "will be important news for improvement of the rule of law framework," while the opening of chapters 35 and 32 by the end of this year " will also be a good signal for citizens of Serbia."
