PM tells opposition MPs that "90s era is over"

The prime minister in this way responded to the remarks of opposition MPs that he "called them traitors."

He said this was "not true - but that perhaps some figures are not precise, because revenues are greater than planned and expected," and that he expected "a reasonable debate, not empty talk that belongs to the political milieu of the 1990s."

Vucic was addressing an assembly session debating one-time assistance to teachers and university professors, saying he "thought education workers were happy because of the RSD 7,000 assistance and the four-percent salary increase."

"I came to the assembly because of the one-time assistance to teachers and university professors, not because of the budget rebalancing," Vucic said, addressing deputies, and added he would "not allow anyone to, without responding, repudiate somebody's responsible work and success."

Vucic's address came after a fierce debate initiated by opposition MPs who criticized the level of public sector salaries and pensions increase, enabled through the government's agreement with the IMF.

"This is about giving money, not about calculating something badly. Perhaps we calculated badly because we secured more money on the revenue side and spent less on the spending side," Vucic said, and noticed that "when someone talks about rebalancing it is usually spurred by our spending being greater, and revenues lower."

This time, he said, revenues are greater and spending lower than planned, and told the critics "that's the key big thing for this country, whether somebody likes it or not."

Stressing that "nobody who repudiates somebody else's success and responsible work will go without a response," Vucic said, "we are much more successful that those who previously ruled the country - I will fight until the last drop of sweat that Serbia moves forward and that we don't go back to the past."
