Stefanovic: Eight crime groups uncovered in three months

Speaking at a session of the parliamentary committee on defence and interior affairs, he said that the crime groups were involved in counterfeiting money, misuse of payment cards, drug and arms smuggling and extortions.

As a result of these police clampdowns, the Ministry of Interior was also praised by the European Commission earlier this month for fighting organised crime and corruption, Stefanovic said.

Over 600 kilograms of drugs seized

BELGRADE - Police seized over 600 kilograms of various types of narcotics between July and September this year, as well as 8,671 units of synthetic drugs, Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Thursday.

Speaking at a session of the parliamentary committee on defence and interior affairs, Stefanovic specified that 497.8 kilograms of marijuana, 21.9 kilograms of heroin and 9.2 kilograms of cocaine were seized in that period, with 1,212 drug-related crimes uncovered as well.

During those three months, major results were also achieved in uncovering frauds in distribution of excise goods, with 30,497 cigarette cartons seized as a result, Stefanovic said.

He added that 6.6 tons of tobacco were also seized.
