Nikolic had "high-level treatment in Beijing as the first president received by China's president and prime minister, due to the big contribution he made to improving relations between the two countries."

The statement added that Nikolic was also "the first to accept the invitation to attend the military parade."

12,000 soldiers took part in the parade, showing tanks, rockets and aircraft, news agencies have been quoted as reporting by Beta. Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Park Geun-hye, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon were among the leaders who attended.

"Most leading democracies kept high-level representatives away, reflecting concerns over the parade's anti-Japanese tone and China's recent aggressive moves to assert territorial claims. The U.S. sent only its ambassador to observe," AP reported, quoted by Beta.

Serbian Army (VS) Guard soldiers also participated in the parade.
