Minister says it's "important to be prepared" for chapters

It would be too ambitious to open 15 EU membership negotiations chapters in 2016, says the Serbian minister without portfolio in charge of EU integration.

Minister says it's "important to be prepared" for chapters

Asked by the Danas newspaper whether Serbia could next year, after opening the first - "open as many as 15 chapters in the negotiations with the EU" - Joksimovic stated that the country expects to receive, by the end of the year, reports from screenings of all negotiating chapters from the European Commission.

The European Commission, she added, has so far done reports for 13 chapters, "while were have already received an invitation to draft the negotiating position, without criteria for opening (for chapters 5, 13, 20 and 26), for which we are already working on negotiating positions."

'' I believe we will open chapters 35 and 32 by the end of the year so that next year it would be realistic to open about a dozen more,'' said Joksimovic.

In any case, said Joksimovic, "we now have a complete team so we will be efficient, but the number of 15 chapters is too ambitious, given EU procedures."

''It is important to be prepared and approach negotiations in a serious way," said Joksimovic.
