"Restoration of visa regime would be step backwards"

Commenting on the rumors that the visa-free regime could be brought into question, Kukan told Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti that the possibility of suspension of the visa-free regime could become grounded if the dramatic situation with the great number of migrants advancing toward the western European countries does not get any better, adding that he does not believe that this will happen.

I am certain that representatives of the EU and regional countries will put efforts, take certain measures that will yield results and find an appropriate solution, he said, stressing that there is strong political will not to restore visas since that would be a true step backwards.

Stressing that Serbia is responsible only for its own citizens who are trying in many ways to reach the EU countries, Kukan said that putting up fences, such as the one Hungary is placing along the borderline with Serbia, is not a way to solve the current situation.

I do not think that it would be useful and helpful if everyone started building up walls, Kukan said.
