Activists from several NGOs on Monday gathered in Zagreb's Bana Jelacica Square to honor "all victims of Operation Storm."

Croatia: NGOs remember Operation Storm victims

The Croatian Hina agency is reporting that the NGOs that took part included the Center for Women Victims of War - ROSA and the Women's Network of Croatia, and that they organized the gathering together with the Serb Democratic Forum and the Association of Freedom-Loving Activists.

They carried banners reading, "Let's pay respects to the victims," "(Operation) Storm victims are the responsibility of us all," "667 killed civilians, 220,000 expelled."

Organizers said that 1,853 persons are listed as either killed or missing as a consequence of Croatia's military and police operation launched 20 years ago - "a majority being of Serb nationality."

"We see that with the military parade tomorrow the state seems to be preparing for a new war, without ending the previous one. It did not take the responsibility, it did not investigate the crimes, it did not ascertain the facts. Without that, the war continues perpetually," said Nela Pamukovic from the enter for Women Victims of War.

According to her, "the Second World War also never ended because the battle with data and numbers continues."

Pamukovic explained that the gathering today "honored the victims because the government declares itself about, and honors the soldiers who died - but not the civilian victims of the war."

"The myths are perpetuated, monuments are raised to persons who contributed to the crimes, while the civilian victims are not mentioned," she pointed out.

The NGOs also urged Croatia's authorities "to distance themselves from the crimes committed in the name of Croatia," adding that until they do so, "we are all responsible for those crimes."

A similar gathering was planned to be held in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, in front of the Croatian embassy - but the Interior Ministry of the Sarajevo Canton banned it.
