British lawyer says spy was killed "on Putin's orders"

Emmerson said that Moscow was attempting to "thwart and control" the investigation into the death of Litvinenko by "refusing to cooperate and setting objections and obstacles."

Litvinenko, who fled to London in 2000 and became a fierce critic of Putin, died after drinking tea laced with polonium-210 in a hotel in London.

Before he died, Litvinenko accused Putin of ordering the murder. The Kremlin has rejected these accusations.

According to Emmerson, " Litvinenko was identified as an enemy of the state who had to be liquidated because he wanted to reveal the ties between Putin and organized crime."

This case has worsened relations London and Moscow, which further escalated with economic sanctions the West imposed against Russia over the situation in the east of Ukraine.

The investigation into Litvinenko's death has been stalled for several years because the British authorities do not wish to reveal secret intelligence evidence.
