Serbia, Austria, Hungary sign MoU for border protection

It envisages establishment of joint border patrols on Serbia's borders with Hungary and Macedonia, intensification of groups fighting organized transfer of migrants and the establishment of special points of contact in all three countries.

The interior ministers asked the EU to provide greater financial support for Frontex, as well as to enhance the focus on the Balkans, rather than on the Mediterranean route, through which migrants are trying to reach EU countries.

Mikl-Leitner told a joint press conference with her Hungarian and Serbian counterparts that the continuous wave of migrants has brought Austria "at the limits of our ability to bear the burden," APA news agency reported.

She pointed out that Austria has so far taken care of 40,000 migrants who have applied for refugee status, adding that the number could grow to 70,000 this year.

Stefanovic said that Serbia wants to shoulder part of the burden.

Hungary was brought into focus in past few weeks after it announced it will erect a four-meter high fence along the border with Serbia to try to stem the flow of illegal migrants.
