EC VP: Serbia's progress visible in Brussels

At a meeting with Serbian Minister without Portfolio for European Integration Jadranka Joksimovic, with whom he discussed the negotiation process and the reforms implemented, he noted that the results achieved and the government's commitment to European integration are highly appreciated, and encouraged the government to maintain the same pace.

The Serbian government has done much towards the implementation of reforms, and the goal of the reforms is not only to open the chapters but, most of all, establish a mature and developed society, a statement from Joksimovic's office quoted her as saying.

The opening of the chapters would be a positive signal for Serbia and an additional encouragement for accelerating the reform process, the minister said.

Earlier on Thursday, Sefcovic praised Serbia for adopting a national plan for voluntary reducing greenhouse gas emission levels by 2030.

This is an important signal and a good example to other countries in the region, but also to the population, showing that Serbia is turning towards green economy, Sefcovic said at the EU - Serbia High Level Conference on Climate Change, an Environment and Climate Regional Accession Network (ECRAN) event in Belgrade.

Sefcovic said he was satisfied to see new technologies being implemented in Serbia during a visit to the thermal power plant in Obrenovac near Belgrade the day before.

Pointing out that green economy is one of the most fruitful areas for job creation, Sefcovic said that as a global leader in the fight against climate change, the EU was willing to help countries in the region deal with the problem.

ECRAN is a European Commission project financed by the EU, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation between the EU candidate countries and potential candidates in environmental protection and climate action and assisting their progress in the transposition and implementation of the EU environmental and climate acquis.
