Dačić denies involvement in wiretapping

Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić has said that he "had nothing to do" with the wiretapping of the president and first deputy PM.

BELGRADE Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic has said that he "had nothing to do" with the wiretapping of the president and first deputy PM. He added that it was unacceptable and that it was necessary to make changes within the Interior Ministry (MUP). Dacic denies involvement in wiretapping President Tomislav Nikolic and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic have confirmed that they have been wiretapped for some time. Dacic told Belgrade-based Prva TV that the police had requested phone records but that they had not been aware that the phone number belonged to Vucic. Commenting on the wiretapping of Nikolic and Vucic, the interior minister said that it was unacceptable. “This certainly has nothing to do with me as an interior minister. It has to do with the police because there is no clear supervision and control system for operations,” he said on Friday. “I have information that the police have requested phone records, as they said, not knowing that this was Aleksandar Vucic’s phone. Things like that cannot happen and I therefore think that changes are necessary in MUP. There will be an opening for the police director soon and everybody who is taking part in this should not stay in their positions anymore,” Dacic said. Nikolic addressed the issue in an RTS program late on Wednesday and said: "We have fallen into a hornet's nest here, among the people who use their top offices in many services to rule over lives, among the people who have been insolent enough to wiretap first myself, and then Aleksandar Vucic. This must be investigated thoroughly. This cannot be the way of life in Serbia." The interior minister said that he absolutely supported Nikolic and Vucic’s requests that the case be investigated. “It has happened before that phone records of my closest associates were requested,” he told Prva TV. President Tomislav Nikolić and First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić have confirmed that they have been wiretapped for some time.

Dačić told Belgrade-based Prva TV that the police had requested phone records but that they had not been aware that the phone number belonged to Vučić.

Commenting on the wiretapping of Nikolić and Vučić, the interior minister said that it was unacceptable.
