BELGRADE Today marks the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in World War II. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic laid a wreath to the Liberators of Belgrade Memorial in the presence of the Serbian Army (VS) Guard and members of numerous WWII veterans associations. 68th anniversary of Belgrade liberation marked “As long as there is a one Serbian citizen, one Serb, as long there is a memory, we will teach our children that they should work hard to prove they deserve the life and freedom you gave them,” the president wrote in the memorial book on Saturday. Representatives of Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Azerbaijani Embassies in Belgrade attended the commemoration. After 11 days of fighting, members of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NOVJ) and their allies, mostly soldiers of the Russian Red Army, liberated Belgrade on October 20, 1944. The battle for the liberation of Belgrade was one of the biggest and most important battles in the Balkans in WWII. Around 20,000 people lost their lives in the battle.
