NOVI SAD European Parliament (EP) Special Rapporteur for the Western Balkans Hannes Swoboda has said that Serbia will have to recognize Kosovo before joining the EU. “Recognition of Kosovo needs to happen in the end but it is not a condition in the EU integration process. But before Serbia becomes an EU member it will certainly have to recognize Kosovo,” he pointed out. Serbia will have to recognize Kosovo, EP rapporteur claims “At the moment, it is important to continue the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. But it would be good for Serbia to accept the facts,” Swoboda told Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik. He noted that Serbia could get a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks next spring but added that “Serbia should calm down radical circles until then”. “A recent decision to ban the Pride Parade shows that the new Serbian government is not committed to European values,” Swoboda was quoted as saying. He added that things that he had heard so far from the Serbian government regarding the EU “are not at all encouraging”. “Constant flirting with Russia, as a sign that the EU is not the only partner to Serbia, is not exactly helpful,” Swoboda concluded.
