Velimir Ilic’s official vehicle was "completely destroyed" when a truck crashed into it at a gas station in Belgrade on Wednesday, said his party. Ilic, who heads the opposition New Serbia (NS) party, was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident, said the NS, claiming that this was "an attack on their leader". Truck crashes into opposition leader’s car Ilic’s driver Robert Gambarjan was injured in the incident. The party has called on the competent authorities to quickly reveal the “political background of the attack” and called for “protection of Ilic’s personal safety so he could be an equal participant in the upcoming campaign”. “It is completely incomprehensible that despite all the warnings from the NS nobody from the competent bodies has reacted to an interview with Ilic’s attacker Dejan Stojadinovic, who was released after two years in prison and said he was not sorry about what he did and that he would do it again,” the NS said in a statement. The party added that the incident happened around 10:45 CET at the NIS gas station in Dimitrija Tucovica St. in Belgrade. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic reacted to the news today to say that there were "no indications" that the car crash was in fact an attempt to assassinate Ilic. "Velimir Ilic enjoys police protection, and if that is insufficient, we are ready to increase the number of officers providing him with escort, based on security assessments. That said, at this time we have no operative information that he is in any danger," Dacic told reporters in the town of Kraljevo, central Serbia. Ilic's car is seen after the crash (Tanjug) Tanjug
