The last PACE session of the year takes place in Strasbourg today and will focus on the issue of combating violence against women. Throughout the course of the autumn session, the main theme has been the ongoing situation in Georgia and the consequences of the war between that country and Russia. PACE to conclude work for 2008 This debate was brought for urgent debate in Strasbourg on Tuesday. The second part of the debate, where conflicting opinions could be heard from the Russian and Georgian delegations, ended yesterday with the adoption of a resolution condemning both sides for the outbreak of conflict in South Ossetia. The autumn session was important for Serbia because of the adoption of a resolution on the status of minorities in Vojvodina, as well as that of the Romanian community in Serbia. The resolution was adopted on Wednesday, after the bulk of the document had been significantly altered by amendments put forward by the Serbian delegation. It meant that the Roman national community was not equated with the Wallachs. The next session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will take place in January 2009, when the agenda will likely include a report and draft resolution on the progress of democratic processes in Serbia and the fulfilment of obligations to the Council of Europe. That report was initially intended to feature at the autumn session, but was put back because of the urgency of the situation in Georgia.
